Coconut Escape, 2017

Museum spaces are dead zones , sensorially speaking. Luo Jr-shin’s Coconut Escape introduces an alien scent into the otherwise antiseptic sense-scape of the white cube, typically free of extraneous sound and smell. The work utilizes the olfactory channel to instigate a rift between expectation and reality for the museum-goer: “Coconut Escape” is also the moniker of a type of air freshener, a number of which the artist has placed in various nooks and crannies across the space of the museum. These capsules are found in the elevator and under staircases, on parapets and platforms, lodged in the entrance vestibule and the gap between walls. The choice of scent is, according to Luo, an aid to unabashed fantasy: “… through the sense of smell, people can instantly flee their current time and space. Perhaps by virtue of the imagination, what is distant is always better.” (Text by Louis Ho)
